Choice Homework

Choice homework will be collected at the end of each week and must add up to a total of 3 points. Listed below are some possible assignments and their corresponding point value.

1 Point


  • If you have Facebook, change the language to Japanese and play on Facebook for 30 minutes.

  • If you have a cell phone, change your cell phone language to Japanese for an entire day.

  • Explore the Japanese-language section of a bookstore or the Japanese Ebooks/Kindle section of amazon.com. Look at 5 books and find two you would like to own.

  • Explore the iTunes Japan store and find one album or 3 songs you would like to own.

  • Using post-it notes, post-it 5 items in your house that you don’t know the word for and leave it there for a week, then report to me from memory what all the items were.

  • On Spotify, find a Japanese artist you like and either 1) listen to their top 5 songs or 2) listen to an album. Report what you listened to and what you thought.

  • Create a wishlist of 5 items on Amazon Japan. Email me the wishlist.

  • Spend 15 minutes playing on one of the following apps or websites:
    • Kanji recognizer
    • Obenkyo
    • JED/ IMIWA
    • ANY APPS FROM THESE SITES:
      • Baby Village
      • Blue Art

  • Play on one or more Japanese-language websites for 15 minutes.
    • www.mcdonalds.co.jp
    • www.cocacola.jp
    • www.starbucks.co.jp

  • Compile a list of 15 Japanese words involving your favorite hobby or a job you'd like to have.

  • Search a hashtag for one of your vocabulary words (#もも, #おもしろい, etc.) on Twitter or Instagram and read 10 entries. Report what you find.

  • Complete 1 Japanese song on lyricstraining.com ("easy" level) and report your results.

  • Watch a video in Japanese on Youtube. It can be about the language such as a new grammar point, or about a cultural aspect. Write up what you learned.

  • Explore Google Trends (google.com/ trends) for the U.S. and Japan and compare what you find.

  • Look up kanji for 5 words you didn’t know before. Tell me what the kanji is made up of (radicals, chunks)  and how it connects to what you’ve learned previously. Use one of the following websites:

    • jisho.org
    • tangorin.com

  • Watch an episode of an anime and write up a list of 10 new words you learned and their meanings.

  • NEW! Go to https://www.google.co.jp/maps and search Marysville or Columbus and the nearby area. Make a list of 15 street names or businesses, or facilities that you can read and recognize.

  • NEW! Go to https://www.google.co.jp/maps and find the map of Japan. Explore the country and prefectures and cities. Make a list of 5 places with kanji you recognize and 5 places you want visit.

  • NEW! Go to http://www.sweets-paradise.jp/shop/kansai/umeda.html and find the menu. Make a list of 15 desserts/dishes you would eat and their English meanings. Also, how much does it cost for an adult to eat there?

3 Points

  • Watch an episode of きょうの料理 (りょうり) on youtube and summarize what was made and its ingredients.

  • Watch JPMCHD Best Japanese TV Ads of 2015 playlist on youtube and report what 3 advertisements were trying to sell, and why you thought that. Also what was the most advertised item or product/ theme? (What Japanese words were used?)

  • Watch an episode of an anime and write up a summary of what happened in 8 sentences all in Japanese.

  • Visit a Japanese store (Tensuke Market) and buy a snack/drink (not from the U.S.). In your report, compare it to a U.S. product.

  • Visit a Japanese restaurant such as Akai Hana, Kihachi, Tensuke Express, Belle’s Bread, Basho, Yoshi’s. Asian cafes or restaurants not mentioned don’t count. Look at the Japanese menus and order 2 things you’ve never tried before. Write up what they were called in Japanese and how they were. Also include 5 menu items and their descriptions all in Japanese.

  • Write a 6-8 sentence story in Japanese. Can be fictitious or based on true events.

  • Go to iyasensei.com and pick a photo from the albums. Describe the photo in Japanese in 6-8 sentences. 

  • NEW! Go to the NHK WebNews Easy at http://www3.nhk.or.jp/news/easy/index.html and summarize an article in Japanese in 6-8 sentences.
