Born in St. Petersburg Russia, Iya Sensei acquired a second language at the age of eight when her family immigrated to the United States. She learned English during her first summer in the U.S. by communicating with summer school classmates.
When she entered high school, she had the opportunity to take Japanese as a foreign language, which she continued to study at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. In addition, she spent a year studying abroad at Kansai Gaidai University in Hirakata-shi, Japan. After graduating from Miami, Iya Sensei furthered her foreign language acquisition studies at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio where she received her licensure to teach both Japanese and Russian. She then spent 7 years designing the brand new Japanese program for the Marysville Exempted Village School District. She currently teaches Japanese at Dublin Jerome High School. Iya Sensei is excited to share her knowledge and experiences with her students, colleagues, and anyone else willing to listen!
